San Juan Mountains Elopement: The Ultimate 2-Day Itinerary
Everyone’s got a guide for how to elope in the San Juan Mountains… but no one talks about how to actually spend the day. Honestly? That’s kind of the most important part! It’s not just about finding the prettiest alpine lake or the most dramatic overlook (don’t worry, I’ve got those). It’s about building in space to breathe. To linger at a waterfall without checking the clock. To sip coffee on a mountaintop (or a beer) and think, “Holy crap, we just got married.”
That’s exactly what Casey and Nathan wanted when they flew in from North Carolina to elope in the San Juan Mountains. They didn’t want a blur, they wanted an experience. So together, we crafted a 2-day elopement that gave them both! Over the 2 days they explored all the best parts of Ouray and Silverton. One day completely to themselves for an intimate sunrise elopement, and one day for a small wedding surrounded by the 11 people who mean the most to them. Best of both worlds, with no rushing and all the magic!
Oh, and if you want to snag this exact itinerary, I made a free downloadable PDF for you linked below and at the bottom of the post. Print it. Pack it. Plan your own dream day.

Why Elope in the San Juan Mountains?
What to know the best part about eloping in the San Juan mountains? Southwest Colorado still has that wild west, backcountry feel. Small towns like Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride feel completely different when you compare them to busy ski resort towns in Summit county like Breckenridge. The peaks are more rugged, it’s easier to find more remote spots, OH and the wildflowers in the summer? Absolutely incredible. Here are my top reasons you should choose the San Juan mountains as your elopement destination:
- That wild west energy? Still alive and kickin’ in the San Juans.
- With a little work you can actually find remote, untouched places to elope.
- These peaks are next-level rugged. Like jaw on the floor rugged.
- Easy access to alpine lakes, waterfalls, and wild backcountry roads.
- Summer wildflowers? They absolutely go off!
- Sunset ceremonies here just hit different.
- Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride have charm you won’t find in the usual ski towns. (If you’re leaning specifically towards the “Switzerland of America,” check out my full Ouray Elopement Planning Guide for a deep dive on planning an elopement).

When Should You Plan a San Juan Mountains Elopement?
This exact itinerary works best between July and early October. The snow’s melted, the roads are usually clear (bless), and those mountain sunrises (and sunsets) are chef’s kiss. Some years we can sneak up there in late June, but it really depends on how wild winter was. If you’re dreaming of alpine lakes and Jeep roads to nowhere (in the best way), July through early October is your golden window.
Here’s what each month brings:
- Late June: Maybe doable at lower elevations if the snow melts early. Some roads are still closed, and lakes may be icy. Still beautiful, but a bit unpredictable.
- July: Green hills, gushing waterfalls, and the full wildflower takeover. A top pick if you want everything lush and alive.
- August: Peak conditions. Warm mornings, glowing sunsets, and high-elevation spots like the ones in this blog? Totally accessible.
- September: Hello, golden aspens. Fall color in the San Juans is no joke. Think fire-orange trees and crisp air. Early September still feels like summer; by late September, you’re getting that autumn glow.
- Early October: The tail end of accessibility. Some higher roads might be snow-dusted, but if you time it right, you’ll get fall colors and solitude.
PRO TIP: Always build in flexibility. Mountain weather loves to throw curveballs, and sometimes trails or passes close for no reason other than “because the mountains said so.” That’s part of the magic!

Day 1 Sunrise Ouray Elopement
4:30 AM – Getting the Day Started
I pulled up to their Airbnb while it was still dark and quiet, and Casey and Nathan were already in the Jeep rental just absolutely beaming with excitement. Their private Jeep driver from San Juan Scenic Jeep Tours took us all up the mountain so they could take in everything without having to worry about rocks and where to put their tires in the dark.

5:30 AM – Getting Ready Photos at a Hidden Alpine Lake
At 11,000 feet, I let them borrow my extra headlamps before we took a short walk to a tucked-away alpine lake just before the sun rose. Casey changed into her dress while Nathan got ready separately, and I started with some beautiful detail shots with their lanterns and wedding details.

6:15 AM – First Look in the Woods
Just as the sun was rising I got Nathan all set up in a beautiful spot for their first look and set the intention. This is the moment where they finally got to see each other in their wedding attire! I stepped away and ducked behind a tree so I could still capture this moment on my camera while they had that true ‘just us’ feeling. When Nathan turned around to see Casey, it was one of those moments. That quiet inhale, that huge smile on his face. There was nothing performative about it. Just raw, honest love in one of the most peaceful places on earth.

6:30 AM – Sunrise Ceremony
The ceremony was just the two of them, with handwritten vows by the water and sunlight breaking over the peaks. No officiant. No audience except for the colorful wildflowers. Just these two, self-solemnizing in the most Colorado way possible. (Yes, you can legally marry yourselves here! No officiants or witnesses required)

6:50 AM – Take It All In
I stepped back and gave them space to be still, to cry, to laugh, to just be. These are the moments that make elopements so different. The ones you remember because no one was rushing you to the next thing.

7:00 AM – Sunrise Picnic by the Lake
French press coffee anyone?! I’ve got a french press and a huge love of coffee, so I love busting out my backcountry coffee setup whenever I can. Do you think Casey & Nathan turned down a hot cup of coffee after waking up at 3AM that morning? Heck no! They clinked mugs and breathed in that just-married mountain air.
(PRO TIP: Picnics also make the best post-vow snack break.)

7:45 AM – Photos at Alpine Lake & Two Different Waterfalls
Before leaving their ceremony location we made sure to get couples photos of them at the spot where they read their vows. This was no crazy game of Simon says. I guide my couples through photos with prompts so it feels natural, fun, and most importantly not forced. As we drove back down the mountain, we swung by not one but TWO hidden roadside waterfalls for some spontaneous portraits. Hair damp from mist, grins from ear to ear, this was their “we did it” energy, and it was everything! This time slot also included about 30 minutes of drive time between the different locations.

9:45 AM – Drive Back to Ouray
With full hearts (and maybe slightly tired eyes), we made the drive back into Ouray. The morning light completely transformed the landscape, offering a totally different perspective since it was dark on our drive up at 4:30AM.

10:45 AM – Back in Ouray
By late morning, we were back in town. They had the rest of the day to go relax, take a nap, have an amazing dinner and gear up for day 2 with the people who mean everything to them.

Day 2: Intimate Wedding at Bright Blue Lake in Silverton
1:30 PM – Getting Ready
I arrived early to help them ease into the day. That means sleeping in, getting a good breakfast and taking it slow. No stress allowed around here! They got ready at a stunning adults only luxury hotel in Ouray: The Beaumont Hotel & Spa. The morning was calm and collected, with soft music playing and that sweet pre-ceremony energy. This was the “surrounded by love” part of the story.

2:40 PM – Heading Up the Jeep Road
They hired San Juan Scenic Jeep tours to take us all the way to the alpine lake. All the views with none of the stress of driving yourselves? 100% recommend! We all caravanned up one of my favorite off-road drives off Red Mountain Pass, a winding old mining road with jaw-dropping views and wildflower patches galore. Eleven guests made the journey with us, and spirits were high!

4:30 PM – Arrive at the Ceremony Spot
We reached the basin with time to breathe (are you seeing a theme here?). Casey did final touch-ups to her hair and makeup. Nathan helped a guest fix their windblown hair and walk Casey’s father across the rocks to the ceremony location. The light was turning golden, and everything felt absolutely perfect.

5:00 PM – Ceremony Begins
With mountains as their backdrop, Casey walked in with her dad while a family member played their favorite song on a speaker. Everyone gathered in a loose semi-circle, and instead of just a simple vow exchange Casey & Nathan had written an entire ceremony just for this moment. There wasn’t a dry eye in sight.

5:35 PM – Toasts & Group Photos
Directly after Casey & Nathan signed their married license they popped bottles of champagne and toasted with their guests to an epic wedding adventure at 11,000 feet. A few guests had prepared speeches and it had everyone in tears. After the ceremony glow, they snapped a few group portraits (the kind you actually want to hang up), and soaked in some bear hugs, high fives, and belly laughs.

6:00 PM – San Juan Mountains Elopement Photos
While their guests hung back at the Jeep, Casey and Nathan and I wandered around the lake for some private sunset portraits. They had the entire lake to themselves. It was quiet, golden, and just sooo magical!

7:40 PM – Drive Back to Ouray
We packed the fam’ back into the scenic Jeep and took off back to Ouray. On our way through Silverton and down highway 550, we all saw a moose! I even managed to snap a few photos. What a way to end the adventure part of the day for Casey & Nathan’s wedding day in the San Juan Mountains. Onto the reception!

7:40 PM – Reception Dinner at The Beaumont Hotel in Ouray
For their reception, there isn’t a more romantic place in downtown Ouray than The Beaumont Hotel & Spa. This place makes you feel like you are truly in a postcard. Hummingbirds on the patio, vines on the string lights, mountain views, and top shelf drinks? I mean scroll down and check out this amazing spot! As expected their staff was accommodating and very friendly, plus you get dedicated parking when you stay there.

9:00 PM – Night Wedding Photos in Downtown Ouray
After dinner we wandered into downtown Ouray for one last set of photos. The streets were quiet, the light was glowy, and these two? Fully in their just-married bliss. They twirled and danced right in the middle of the road (don’t worry, we were totally safe!), laughing the whole time. The perfect, carefree end to a truly epic San Juan Mountains elopement.

How to Make Your Elopement Legal
While the epic views are the main event, you definitely want to make sure the paperwork is sorted so you’re officially hitched! To get legally married here, you will need to pick up a marriage license in Colorado. The process is incredibly easy, but you do need to be mindful of office hours.
You can swing by the Ouray County Clerk and Recorder’s office when you arrive. They are located at the courthouse in downtown Ouray. Keep in mind that their office is only open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. They do not require reservations, so we can walk right in! So if you’re planning to get married on a Friday – Sunday plan ahead to get your marriage license.
A few quick tips for your visit:
- Both of you must be present with valid IDs (driver’s license or passport).
- The license is valid immediately (no waiting period!) and is good for 35 days.
- You can sign it right there or save it for your ceremony on the mountain.
- It’s not required to get your marriage license in the same county as you’re getting married in
Do I Need A Permit to Elope in the San Juan Mountains?
Ah, the age-old question. And honestly? You’re not alone. This is one of the most common things couples ask me. The San Juan Mountains are big. Like, really big. We’re talking a mix of National Forest, BLM land, and other public lands, so the rules can vary a bit depending on exactly where we go.
The short answer? It depends.
But don’t stress. I’ve got you.
As your photographer and your built-in location-scout-slash-permit-researcher, I’ll help figure out exactly what’s needed for the spot you choose. Once we narrow down your dream location, I’ll check with the local ranger district or land agency to confirm the details.
Most of the time, if your elopement is small and we keep things Leave No Trace friendly, you won’t need a special use permit at all. That usually means:
- Keeping your group small and low impact
- No arches, tables, chairs, or other set ups
- Skipping the confetti & flower petals (sorry!)
- Follow leave no trace: Pack-it-in-pack-it-out vibes

Final Thoughts on Planning a San Juan Mountains Elopement
Casey and Nathan’s 2-day elopement wasn’t about filling time, it was about making space. Space for intimacy, for awe, for laughter and stillness and celebration. It was planned from 1,800 miles away, and it came together like magic because they trusted the process (and me!) every step of the way.
You don’t have to squeeze it all into one rushed afternoon. You can have both: quiet moments for just the two of you, and meaningful connection with your favorite people. That’s why I LOVE two day elopements & small weddings!
If you want to see how it can all unfold, step by step, slow and intentional, this itinerary is yours.
