Crested Butte Elopement Planning Guide for 2026-2027

Updated: April 3, 2026

Thinking about ditching the big wedding venue and eloping in Crested Butte? You’re in the right place, especially if you’d rather get married in hiking boots than high heels. This isn’t your average how-to elopement guide. It’s for the adventurous couples who want epic mountain views, wildflower-filled trails, and a wedding day that feels like you. Whether you’re inviting your crew or keeping it just the two of you, a Crested Butte elopement offers all the magic without the stress.

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan your wedding day, including the best elopement locations, seasons, legal tips, gear recommendations, and a few “you had to be there” secrets I’ve picked up from years of exploring these mountains. How do I know I can help? I’m a Colorado elopement photographer that specializes in small weddings and elopements in the mountains of Colorado! Over the years I’ve photographed over 200+ elopements just in Colorado and Crested Butte is one of my favorite places in the state to photograph. When you look at photos of Crested Butte you’ll understand why I love it so dang much.

Why Do I Love Planning and Photographing Elopements in Crested Butte?

Living just over an hour away from Crested Butte means I’ve spent countless days exploring its trails, camping in the backcountry, soaking in the vibrant wildflower fields, and falling in love with its quiet charm. It’s not just the jaw-dropping views that make this place special; it’s the energy of the town, the perfect mix of adventure, beauty, and seclusion. I think my favorite thing about Crested Butte is it’s one of the few places in Colorado where you can see wildflower fields as far as the eye can see at the right time of year.

As someone who thrives on exploring the outdoors, there’s nothing more rewarding than helping couples create unforgettable memories in this stunning setting. From guiding couples to secret waterfalls for ultimate privacy to capturing the joy on their faces as they take in the views, every elopement here is a chance to tell a unique story. I’ve been photographing adventurous elopements in Crested Butte full time for over 5 years and no two have been the same!

I’m More Than Just An Elopement Photographer

When you hire me as your Crested Butte elopement photographer, you’re not just getting a professional with a camera, you’re getting someone who knows this area like the back of their hand. You’re getting a fast friend, an elopement guide, a backcountry barista, someone who will light your campfire, and so much more. I’ll help you find the perfect spot, plan your day around the best light, craft you the perfect cup of coffee in the woods, and make sure your experience is nothing short of magical (and maybe a little badass, if that’s what you’re going for). I’m obsessed with camping and hiking and since Crested Butte is so close to my house it’s one of the first places I go when looking for a new adventure!

What No One Tells You About Eloping in Crested Butte

Crested Butte Is Different From Most Mountain Towns

  • Quiet Charm: Unlike bustling towns like Breckenridge or Telluride, Crested Butte feels more secluded and intimate. You’ll get more of the ‘real’ Colorado experience.
  • Remote Location: Nestled in the Rockies, it’s a little harder to get to, but that’s part of the adventure. It’s a 4.5 hour drive from the Denver airport, 4 hours from the Colorado Springs airport, or 2 hours from the Montrose regional airport.
  • Wildflower Capital of Colorado: In summer, you’ll be surrounded by some of the most vibrant blooms in the state. I’m talking wildflower fields as far as the eye can see. No exaggeration here!!
  • Fun Festivals: From the annual Wildflower Festival to Vinotok, the town’s events add a unique charm. There is always something fun going on downtown!
  • Bike-Friendly: Explore the town or trails by bike, because bikes are kind of a big deal here. I highly recommend renting an e-bike and using it to get around town while you’re visiting.
  • Affordable: OK let’s be real, Colorado mountain towns are very expensive and Crested Butte isn’t on the cheap end. However when you compare it to Aspen and Telluride you’ll be VERY happy to see you have a lot more options for accommodations in Crested Butte.

High Altitude Comes With Challenges

At nearly 9,000 feet above sea level, the air is thinner, and weather conditions can change quickly. Staying hydrated, dressing in layers, and allowing 48 hours to acclimate will make your experience much smoother (and keep you from gasping for air on the way to your ceremony). Some of the places I photograph in Crested Butte might be as high as 11,500 feet so it’s important you come prepared for the altitude.

PRO TIP: When it comes to avoiding altitude sickness, I highly recommend drinking electrolytes, staying hydrated, eating well (not skipping meals) and not drinking alcohol.

Best Time to Elope in Crested Butte

As an elopement photographer and wildflower lover, I think my favorite season in Crested Butte is summer but every season has it’s pros and cons! If you’re planning to elope in Crested Butte, I highly recommend sticking on a Monday – Thursday at either sunrise or sunset. This will help offer the best seclusion for your ceremony.

The snowmelt creates lush landscapes, flowing streams and roaring waterfalls. There are cooler temperatures than July, and you’ll have fewer crowds. Accommodations tend to be cheaper during these months as they call it the ‘mud season’. You will encounter snow in the high elevation locations through early July.

If you’re getting married in Crested Butte during the summer chances are you already know this is the wildflower capital of Colorado. You’ll find that wildflowers are at their peak in July, but start around late June. You will also find wildflowers at high elevation locations into August. These months are ideal for adventurous couples who want the best scenery and accessibility to secluded locations. Early September also feels like summer.

To enjoy the fall colors at their peak in Crested Butte, you will likely want to opt for the last week of September or the first few days of October. Kebler Pass is home to one of the biggest Aspen groves in North America! Historically, we almost always get a dusting of snow by the end of the first week in October that takes out the remaining golden aspen leaves.

I know it sounds crazy, but yes, winter lasts November through March in Crested Butte due to the high elevation. However this is good news for you if you want snow covered peaks, seclusion, and epic skiing! The Crested Butte Ski Resort is known for it’s epic terrain, beautiful views and short lift lines.

You will be limited on access to different locations in these months.

Mountain Wedding Garden

Ceremony location at the Mountain Wedding Garden in Crested Butte shows what a micro-wedding looks like.

Sometimes you need a little more room for the fam, I get it! That’s why I also wanted to include my favorite wedding venue in Crested Butte: the Mountain Wedding Garden. It combines mountain views with wildflowers and everything you need in one place. The string lights in the reception area truly bring the photos and the vibes to life. Note: This venue will be closed for 2027, so be sure to book for 2026 if you have your eye on this spot!

Ten Peaks Wedding Venue

If you love the idea of a location that has it all: Space for up to 180 guests, lodging, catering, stunning wildflowers, 360 degree mountain vistas, a unique tiered amphitheater for your ceremony, a dining tent and a location for cocktail hour then you might love the idea of getting married at the Ten Peaks wedding venue in Crested Butte.

Even if you get married in a big venue, there is nothing stopping you from going out on your own for a ‘just us’ day where you read your vows in private. Who says you have to read your wedding vows in front of 100+ people? I truly believe in making your wedding day tailored to YOU.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Crested Butte?

There is no easy answer to this question. Long story short, it depends. It depends on where your ceremony will be located. More than likely you’ll be on land owned by the Crested Butte Land Trust, Gunnison National Forest, Raggeds Wilderness or Maroon-Bells Snowmass Wilderness areas. Wilderness areas will have different regulations compared to National Forest land. All ceremony locations owned by the Crested Butte Land Trust do require a reservation and fee. (for example: Woods Walk, Peanut Lake, etc).

If you’re unsure if a location requires a permit, I recommend reaching out to the entity who owns the land. In most cases in Crested Butte it will be the Gunnison National Forest.

Don’t forget to follow leave no trace principles when getting married in the great outdoors! This applies to vendors as well!

Best Things To Do In Crested Butte

Elopements and intimate weddings are about so much more than just the ceremony. People forget that you have the entire day to celebrate, connect, and be fully present with each other. Adding in meaningful or adventurous activities isn’t just fun, it’s also one of the best ways to get candid, natural photos that truly reflect your relationship! Whether it’s something slow and cozy or wild and spontaneous, these little moments help make your elopement feel like your wedding day, not just a quick exchange of vows. A few of my favorite Crested Butte elopement activities are below!

How to Get Married on Public Lands in Crested Butte

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare: Research the rules of the specific area, check the weather, and ensure you have all the essentials for a safe, low-impact experience.
  2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces: Stick to established trails and campsites to avoid damaging delicate vegetation.
  3. Dispose of Waste Properly: Pack out all trash, leftover food, and other waste. Yes, this includes biodegradable items like orange peels. Most importantly, toilet paper! DO NOT leave your toilet paper. It will not disintegrate in high alpine environments!
  4. Leave What You Find: Avoid picking flowers, collecting rocks, or altering the landscape in any way.
  5. Minimize Campfire Impact: If you’re camping as part of your adventure, use a camp stove or follow fire regulations for the area.
  6. Respect Wildlife: Keep your distance from animals and never feed them, wildlife needs to stay wild.
  7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors: Share the trails and spaces respectfully with others who are enjoying the land.

Here’s What You Should Know About Traveling to Crested Butte

Crested Butte is an absolutely amazing place to elope but it’s also very remote! Honestly? That’s what makes it special. It’s not just a quick stop off the highway, it’s a secluded destination tucked away into the Rocky Mountains. Once you arrive, you’ll understand why it’s worth the 4.5 hour drive from the Denver airport.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) – This extremely small airport is only about 45 minutes away. Super convenient, but only if you can find a flight.
  • Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) – About 1.5 to 2 hours away, with more flight options.
  • Colorado Springs Airport (COS) – A little less than 4 hours away from Crested Butte. Personally, this is one of my favorite airports. It’s very easy to fly in and out of! Parking is much cheaper than at the Denver airport.
  • Denver International Airport (DEN) – 4.5 to 5 hour drive. A longer drive, but sometimes cheaper flights and car rentals.

There’s really just one main road into Crested Butte, and that’s part of the charm.

You’ll most likely arrive via Highway 135, a scenic drive that takes you straight through Gunnison and up into town. It’s well-maintained and open year-round, even in winter.

If you’re visiting in the summer or early fall, there’s also the option of coming over Kebler Pass: A gravel mountain pass that connects from the west and offers jaw-dropping mountain views. But keep in mind: It closes seasonally and isn’t ideal in bad weather or if you’re unfamiliar with mountain roads. A lot of the pass does not have cell service.

PRO TIP: I always recommend arriving a day or two early, not just to acclimate to the altitude, but to soak in the slower pace and mountain magic. It’s part of the experience.

Where to Stay In Crested Butte

Since Crested Butte is a very small town you’ll find that you won’t have as many lodging options compared to other Colorado mountain towns such as Breckenridge or Aspen. The closest large town to Crested Butte, Gunnison, is 45 minutes away. Almont is another very small town in-between Crested Butte and Gunnison, but even that is roughly 25 to 30 minutes away. It’s best to stay in Crested Butte or Mt Crested Butte to be close to your ceremony location.

Example Crested Butte Elopement Timelines

I’ve chatted with a ton of couples that are stuck between an elopement or a small/intimate wedding. Here is a wild idea, what about both? What if you spent an entire day just the two of you? You could hike to a secret waterfall and read your vows without a soul around. Maybe spend some time stargazing in an area where you can see the milky way with the naked eye? Then the next day you could spend 100% focused on your guests and celebrating with them! I’ve even had couples split their coverage between sunrise and sunset. Handwritten vows at the top of a mountain at sunrise and a sunset intimate wedding with your closest loved ones! If we plan it just right you’ll even have time for a nap in the afternoon.
